MY FIRST YEAR UBC SCIENCE GRADES

Heyo!

I've wanted to film this video since the beginning of first term, regardless of what the outcome was. Grades are never something I openly shared in high school, or really in my first year to be honest... so this is a big step. I just felt like I should share this because I know when I was starting university, I had a fair bit of anxiety surrounding what would happen to my grades. I knew they would go down but the question was by how much. I know that everyone has different goals, but regardless, I thought I'd share how my first year went just so you guys had a frame of reference!

I had a 94% average in my grade 12 year, taking 3 AP courses, and 4 other classes... I think it was 4 haha I can't totally remember. Anyways, this is not meant to provide you with a basis of comparison because your experience and my experience will be completely different. This video was solely intended to maybe ease some of the anxiety surrounding how your grades might change... here's hoping I kind of delivered on that! Thank you for so supportive you guys, it means the world!

LITERALLY my grades in my first year UBC sciences. (K almost literally) I also had a very high high school average but it was really hard for me to not define myself with my UBC grades after first year. Happy I came across this vid and see another person "struggling" or not doing as amazing as they once did. It's honestly very encouraging! TY for making these!

I'm one of those love physics & math persons. I'm attempting a double major in physics and chemistry for a degree in materials science/nano-materials. I thought I was going to fail comm, because that is where my weak point lies. It was surprisingly non-horrible, however, because it dealt with science writing, and I could appreciate the value in it. I didn't get a super-duper wonderful grade, but it was acceptable.

Hi! I'm currently a first yr student taking phys 117 but I'm struggling 😪so I was wondering if phys 131/phys 101 is understandable? Is it easier than phys 117?

I never expected you wouldn’t like physics and calculus. They are the best courses ever!! I am just joking haha. I understand how difficult it must have for you to adapt to something you didn’t like. At one point, I certainly lost an interest in both of these courses, but over time this feeling has really changed and I now have a lot higher appreciation for these fields of study.
I am glad you did quite well even when you were in a position of fear and doubt. Good luck on any future studies in the beautiful wonders of science and math!

Hi! I'm a prospective student but I have no idea what to do for course selecting. I do know people who attend UBC science who are more than willing to help me choose courses, but it'd be nice to know a little bit about how UBC's courses work. So these are basically the questions that I've been wondering:
1. How do you know what classes are required for science? Where do they tell you that?
2. What do the numbers mean? (ex. BIO 112)

and if there are any studying tips you could give us, what would they be?

Thank you!

when you say 94% average in high school, do you only mean your grade 12 average? Also is that for all the courses you took or just the required ones to get you into science?

You mentioned that the courses you took were mandatory for first year science students. Would you mind elaborating on that? How can we make time for electives if we have to take all those classes?
I'm really confused about the whole process of choosing my courses and am very scared I won't plan them smartly T_T
