I have the utmost respect for Dai stopping to take rhetorical time and truly understand why Shun is the way he is.
Imagine never having known the love from a mother, father, sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousins, family friends…. Learning only from carers in an orphanage who try hard not to get emotionally attached to the children. Or from the children themselves who have learnt from a young age, that no one else is fully going to have their back and they only have themselves to protect them.
Shun knows he is emotionally stunted and is desperate for kindness and attention.
It was blatant why he kept doing things to push Dai away. He needed to be certain that any potential mistakes or problems that occur due his lack of social skills and awareness, (from never having been taught) wouldn’t make Dai walk away from a potential relationship with Shun.
… and Dai the amazing human he is, stepped up and realised Shun is offering everything he wants in a relationship….
I hope they last the distance and are both sitting on the couch behaving this way when they are old and gray.
