For those that dont know Murphy also got to play himself in a movie about his life as he became an actor post war. He was in several westerns. On a darker note he was also the poster child for PTSD. Gambled himself into debt, was an alcoholic, and drug addict. Also had moments of paranoia, depression, and a violent temper. He ultimately died in a plane crash.

You shd hv mentioned Alvin York, bcz he performed the most unbelievable, single action in all military history in the Argon Forest during WW1. IMO.

How in the world did you fail to include MSG Roy Benavidez, U.S. Army, Green Beret? MSG Benavidez earned the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and 5 Purple Hearts while serving in the Korean War and Vietnam. While in Vietnam, 1968, he heard that a team of soldiers were surrounded and greatly outnumbered. Several members of this team were KIA and wounded. He jumped on the first chopper heading out to rescue them. Once there, he hit the ground running, he helped establish defense, and organized the loading of the KIA and wounded, all the while being wounded himself several times. As this chopper lifted off, it was hit by enemy fire and crashed. He then helped the transferring of KIA and wounded onto another chopper, which now included the pilot and copilot from the first chopper. At one point an enemy soldier ran up on him and bayoneted him. During a hand-to-hand fight, he killed this enemy soldier and another enemy solder. During all the above activity, MSG Benavidez was shot several times, stabbed, and received numerous wounds from explosions; a total of 37 wounds, all the while saving 8 soldiers and securing sensitive documents. After everyone was on the last chopper, MSG Benavidez managed to get onboard. He was covered in blood from all his wounds and appeared lifeless when the choppers landed. He was thought to be dead and MSG Benavidez was placed in a body bag. Before the bag could be closed, he managed to move or make a sound, letting them know he was alive. In 1981 President Ronald Reagan awarded MSG Benavidez the well-deserved, and about-time, Medal of Honor.

Disclaimer: I believe all the detailed addressed above is correct, some may be out-of-order. Sorry.

In 1996, while attending the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, I had the honor to meet MSG Benavidez. When he spoke to our class, he was humble and soft spoken. During his talk, the said, “The only races in America are, the Red, White, and Blue). Later, he was gracious enough to allow me to have a photo with him. With his permission, later I mailed this photo him and he autografted it for me. I treasure this picture.

MSG Benavidez passed in 1998..

Not to dismiss the service and honors of those mentioned, but just off the top of my head, Matt Urban tied Audie Murphy once his Medal of Honor was awarded, he just didn't get his picture on Life magazine, Robert Howard receive more medals that either of Urban or Murphy, Eugene Fluckey received a Medal of Honor and 3 or 4 Navy Crosses, John Bulkeley received a Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and Distinguished Service Cross. Lastly, people want to forget Douglas Mac Arthur because of who he was, but Medal of Honor, 3 Distinguished Service Crosses, 5 Distinguished Service Medals, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, 8 Siver Stars.
