The last Government ran residential school closed in 1996. The last private one closed in 2003. It was in Nunavut.

My dad went there for 3 years starting in 1980 at age of eight years old. My uncle escaped from there in 1986 after running away. They were the last generation in my family to attend but both are still here (in their 40’s).

It’s important to remember the full extent of what happened in the Indian Residential School system, from the crimes committed an individual level but to the entire degree of culpability and genocidal brutality that was inflicted..

I’m flabbergasted, disgusted by these recent findings, No, we should not be celebrating Canada Day with fireworks but show our support by i.e. lighting a candle for those innocent children and for the families affected by this atrocity. My dear friend a Mi’kmaq Indigenous member who recently passed away shared with me years prior of their horrible experience while growing up in a boarding school with mean spirited individuals who worked there. This is not what “Christian’s” are suppose to do according to what God wanted and that was to love and respect one another but this world we live in is all about what we look like, what we have, and what we do. We have got stop being afraid of the unfamiliar when it comes to other people’s culture, nationality, history and/or religion. Let us learn to better understand and get to know the Indigenous people of this land. May those children Rest In Peace

When I’ve heard the news this morning, it’s saddens my spirit so much, my God how can those people killed so much children and get away with it, now who is going to answer to these precious souls, send your children to school and they never return, now this is beyond wickedness… come on we need more answers and who is going to be responsible for it. This is extremely saddening news, and more graves will be found, .. I hope that there can be accountability to the church and government who allowed this to happen, . and I hope there are mental health programs to help the healing of the Indigenous community especially in this time of need, , .. but, celebrating Canada Day isn't condoning genocide, every country has it's horrible past, but we don't represent that., we represent the now, and the future, change and hope, .. I am thankful that I live in a non-communist country, I'm thankful for job opportunities, freedom of religion and expression, , I am thankful that I live in a diverse country to share and experience other cultures.... Thats why I will celebrate the Good things of Canada on July 1st.

Well the blame lays at the feet of the Catholic Church and yes I will celebrate my great Country which when compared to most is still a bastion of decency and compassion. The schools were run by the Catholic church and the Government of the time bears the negligence of letting the church run these schools without any protections or regulations or oversight.
