The developers of the BMW M3 and M4 have the floor. No frills; just information — first-hand from those who know best. In Episode 12, Markus, Jonas and Alex talk about the aerodynamics of the new M vehicles.

BMW M3 Competition / BMW M4 Competition:
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.2. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 234.
BMW M3 / BMW M4::
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.8. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 248.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval.

The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model. The values of the vehicles are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. [With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2-emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here.] The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.

What a thorough explanation of the aerodynamic design process!! Love these videos.

So this is the guy responsible for the “grill”...

Thank you BMW M for the in depth explanation. Everything on the new car is an essential component to optimize the performance of this great car. I'd love to drive one someday soon.

why is the video vertical? you can turn you phone to be horisontal. I cannot turn my laptop or tv to be vertical...

Now imagine situation where some random tuning shop redesigns front bumper in its backyard garage and all cooling and aerodynamic concepts are disrupted.. And all of this just for the sake of looks alone :)

Finally use for portrait video when he was under the car with the CFD picture above! Clearly didn't do smoke testing on the rear of the one series, vortex mode attracts dirt there better than a hoover! These new machines are really big and really serious I think their performance will be incredible. Whether they're accessible and fun for the average buyer on the road is the question.

Awesome technical details. The oil cooler is completely uncovered though? Wow that’s bold

Hello BMW: These videos are amazing!
Just dont make vertical please.
Also, as a serious potential buyer, the front Grille is just not attractive at
On the positive side, this Grille will help you sell more M3/4 from past years to us though.
Also, please keep making manuals (stick shift) and soft tops.
Sincerely a proud owner of e46 zhp soft top.

Hallo Markus! What's the drag coefficient (Cd) of a pig snout 🐽 compared to the grille you're in front of to hide? 🤔😂

so, they are trying to tell me the insanely huge grill is required for cooling... im calling BS on that.

that oil cooler looks like an vulnerable area

1/3 of my monitor enjoyed this video. (Why the vertical video??)

Really great content though! Keep the videos coming, but in a horizontal aspect ratio. =)

Why did you break that long beautiful line on the side 😢4:55

That un-protected oil cooler begs for damage. And we all know it happens, there are at least a few people with damaged coolers and at least one M5 with a blown engine

Minute 8:30: "Downforce is reduced"? I thought the goal is to increase downforce.
Glaube die deutsche Originalstimme spricht auch von "Auftrieb wird reduziert".

Man! don't get into a front end accident!!  way more complex than my E92 M3!

That oil cooler looks vulnerable. The solution?

Simply don't crash then.
