I don’t think there has been a better physique look wise than Lee Priest in his prime. Dude was a monster

Calf, the most overlooked muscle, but in terms of symmetry, most important

Lee Priest is sure one hell of a beast!

Lee is still one of the few from the era that is still absolute muscle. The only other two I can think of are Cutler and Ruhl.

It's not a matter of preference... it's biomechanics. Standing calf raises engage the gastrocnemius, seated calf raises engage the soleus because the bent knee joint excludes the gastrocnemius....

Probably the greatest pound for pound body ever

Soleous is activated during seated raises....gastroc is not. Both muscles activated during standing raises

The gastrocnemius is primary plantar flexor (pulls foot down) but it’s also a secondary knee flexor due to its attachment to the femur. So, standing upright stretches it and results in a more intense eccentric without having to bend the foot upwards as much at the bottom of the rep (which would result in the pressure on the ankle that Priest was describing occurring when seated).

Personally, I also get a lot of pressure on my knee/quad with heavy-loaded seated raises - no such issue when standing.

Seated primarily works the soleus which is much smaller than gastrocnemius. Training the soleus will not give you big calves, but it will improve athleticism and help protect or rehabilitate your knees.

They work to different areas of the calves. Seated calf raises isolates the soleus muscle of the calves which is the muscle you see from the side under the belly of the calves. And the main belly’s are called gastrocnemius and are isolated by doing standing calves raise that’s why they give better results because the gastrocnemius muscle is larger and more visible, therefore it would be optimal to work both.

I always do mine on a leg press machine but I’m also trying to incorporate standing now too with a barbell and it’s a game changer

one legged body-weight calve raises with a stretch are enough for most

And his Bicep and Calves proportions are the same. He really is the Giant Killer.
