Steps:

- I will be showing you how to do this on the Facebook app but the settings will be similar on desktop too.

- If I go to my profile page and tap on the ‘view as’ option to view my profile as someone else, you can see that I currently have an ‘add friend’ button on my profile.

- In order to remove the ‘add friend’ button, from the app homepage tap on the three lines button at the bottom right. If you are on android then the three lines button will be at the top right of the page.

- Scroll down and tap on ‘settings and privacy’ then tap on ‘settings’

- In settings, scroll down to the ‘Privacy’ heading and tap on ‘privacy settings’

- Scroll down to the ‘how people can find and contact you’ heading and tap on ‘who can send you friend requests’

- Change the setting to ‘friends of friends’ there is no option to change it to no one, only friends of friends.

- Now only people who are already friends with one of your friends will be able to send you friend requests, so you won’t get loads of friend requests from random people.

- If I go back to my profile now, and tap on the three dots button to the right of the ‘add story’ button and choose ‘view as’ to view my profile as a stranger, you will see that the ‘add friend’ button has now disappeared.

- There is now a ‘message’ button in its place.

- If instead of a ‘message’ button you now have a ‘follow’ button but you would not like people to be able to follow you then go back and tap on the three lines menu button.

- Tap on ‘settings and privacy’ then tap on ‘settings’

- Scroll down to the ‘Privacy’ heading and tap on ‘public posts’

- Under the first setting ‘who can follow me’ change it to ‘friends’

- Now only your friends will be able to follow you and only friends of friends will be able to send you friend requests.
