Canon EOS R | Auto image transfer, live demo.

Hi everyone! (READ BELOW QUESTIONS IN MY F.A.Q)

Today, I wanted to just do a quick demo to show you how one of my favorite features work on this amazing camera. Auto image transfer!

FAQ:

1. Yes, having the Wi-Fi on effects battery life.. however, I was able to use this for 12-hours at my wedding, and I transferred over 2,000 images to my phone and I went through a total of 2.5 batteries. This is actually right in line with my 1DX. Normally at a wedding, I am on battery 2 for my 1DX at the mid point at the reception. I was impressed, and worst case 3 or 4 would get you though anything.

2. Is it reliable? Yes, you need to ensure that the phone screen is not turned off by pressing the home button. So, be careful with that. This will cause the connection to stop. I plan on keeping my phone in a small lens pouch on my Think Tank camera belt.

3. Can it transfer over RAW? No. Only JPEG (RAW in camera, on SD card tho) JPEG is only what can be transferred., but they are full res. and look amazing. However, for $500 you can get a micro PC, that will run the cannon program, and keep this in your lens pouch.. and then you are set to transfer over RAW files via a cable. So, it depends how important that is to you. For me, the JPEG is perfect as I spoke about in my video.

4. What about your phone battery? At the end of the wedding I was about 54%. I used airplane mode, and I turned the screen to min. power. No issues.

5. What is the range? Well, I tested all around my house.. no issues. I also tested at the wedding reception, and I would say over 200' with direct line of site no problem. It was really, really great.

As a architectural photographer this camera has worked well for us over the last two weeks. Most under estimated camera of 2018. Don't take a talking heads advice. Try it for yourself or from someone that has used it for professional work like Travis. I just uploaded a video last night on why this is a professional camera. Keep up the good work!

2 Questions:

A: Are the images only getting transferred to the Canon App on the mobile device? or are they automatically getting saved to the mobile device also?
B: I really liked this seamless & quick transfer to the mobile device. Are there any other cameras that you can recommend for similar effortless transfer (and saved) to the mobile device?

Hi Travis, great demo! Assuming this camera connects to the phone the way all other current EOS cameras do - turn on Wi-Fi and NFC on your phone. Turn the Wi-Fi feature on your camera and then touch the back of the phone with the NFC symbol on the camera. You'll hear a beep and then everything happens automatically. The phone connects to the camera and the app opens up automatically. You don't have to press anything on either device. At that point we'd normally choose whether to remotely control the camera or manually transfer images to the phone, but that's where the EOS R does its magic.

I'm amazed how quickly those 30MP files transferred. That's very impressive.

Im reading the comments and that's too funny. You mentioned in the video that you're working with jpegs and loving the new way to transfer the files to your phone. Then, in the recent comments, you're saying that now you are working with raws and don't use that transfer method anymore, you're expecting a dual card slot camera hahaha by the way, I love your channel, this information is so helpful, keep it going!

This is so great! I think you should name the video 'No Dual Card Slot Fix for EOS R' or something like that and reach more people because this is truly the only convenient workaround to not having dual card slots! Excellent video!

Thanks for this demonstration, it seems blazingly fast. But it also seems cumbersome, having to reconnect each time. Do you still use this technique or have you found an alternative? Nikons Snapbridge is much easier to handle, also fast, but only small 2MP Jpegs. Canon uses full res files, but with real practical limitations. What is your long term conclusion? That’s how I work with the R, too. I created some nice presets in Snapseed where I process the best shots and show them on my IPhone Max right away. Bringing my Apple TV along and can start an superb! slide show. Than I use GoPro Quik to make it a quick Video impression. Sometimes all the on set processing is so impressive that I rarely use my Mac and Lightroom. If you know what are you doing before and during the shooting (fill flash, right lighting and posing!) you don’t need RAW at all. And: fine detail picture style is really amazing.

Came to your channel by accident, yes shame on Youtubers on breaking this camera, as a wedding photographer I used 5d series without backup for 6 years now without backup, day after day after of shooting with zero issues and stunning results, I really astonished when see people saying this camera is fail and they did say the same when 5dm4 came out back in 2016, I also shoot jpej along with raw but really didn’t touch the raws so maybe I will take your advice and shoot soli jpeg in coming events

Totally agreed. Last 5 years I only shoot jpeg. Raw does have its place but commercial and personal work. Don't miss it at all

Photoshop is not a substitute for talent.

I shoot exclusively in JPG and have since my very first digital camera. I've never used any type of software to add or subtract any element from my images.

Do you know why? Ha! I began with film. With film either you know the basics of light, shadows, rules of thirds, composition, etc. because if you don't you've blown an entire shoot.

Waiting in your own darkroom for your images to develop gives you satisfaction you'll never feel shooting digital.

Encourage your photog community to come to the dark side, buy a nice film camera and a few rolls of B&W and color film.

You'll be amazed at your results in both digital and analog.

Travis, this is a good demo. Quick question; when you turn your camera off (like changing batteries) does it automatically re-connect to the phone on the fly when turned on again or do you need to do it yourself? If so, I can see myself forgetting this on a busy wedding. Still an awesome solution though. And in a way it is safer than a dual card slot since you would still have all images saved if your camera gets lost or stolen (not likely but still)

I know this is an old post however the research I have done has stated that applie ios devices can transfer the raw files as backups! How good is that!

Does the Auto image transfer Feature work in Full Screen Mode? So while the photographer is shooting, someone else can be monitoring the most recent picture? Is this feature available on the 5D Mark IV?

Hi - great video. One question, does the phone screen have to remain on with the app opened for this to work? Or can you turn off the phone screen and pocket it, while still having auto transfer work.
