I think the grunts are fascinating lore wise. They have more personality and, at least mentally, are still somewhat human. I imagine that the grunts are metrocops that have joined overwatch and have been modified, and will have their memories and parts of their personalities slowly eroded as they rise through the ranks.

My guess is that due to the failure of the Overwatch soldiers to stop Alyx from her rampage, as well as a growing resistance movement becoming a threat, the Combine saw fit to remove any left bit of humanity in Overwatch soldiers, like we see in HL2. Truly terrifying

These little scenes in HlA is why I love the combine so much in it. It actually sounds like they are human unlike HL2 where it was technically English but didn't even sound like English.

Grunt: He stopped kicking.

The strider was “dead” before he started kicking it, and it didn’t wake up until a little bit after he stopped.

Percussive maintenance is _always_ a valid solution.
