It's the influence of Chinese dialect (and pasar Malay) when learning from non-native-speaker teachers. E.g. unlike "original" Englishes, which are stress-timed, Singlish is syllable-timed like Southern Chinese languages. That's why you get (in Singlish) the staccato "pow-der-foo" timing instead of (English) "POWderful" where POW is longer than "derful", which contributes to making Singlish sound very different from most Englishes.

Whilst this is supposedly comical, it is SO ACCURATE it hurts.
I have lived in Australia with an SG wife for 20 years and whilst she has "toned it down" some pronunciations NEVER change.
It's so beautiful, and a real connection/identity with her SG roots. Gosh we have fun on our annual trips to the "Little Red Dot"!
