HOT TIP: Almost better than keeping your body's measurements, is measuring your favorite piece of clothing and using that as a reference. I'll measure the shoulders, pit-to-pit, and hem of shirts and waist, rise, inseam, and hem of pants. I have a favorite fitting shirt and pair of pants I use as a base reference for all my possible purchases.

1. Find your measurements.
2. Start simple, then work towards more complicated outfit items.
3. Understand how to take care of your hair, skin and scent. Personal hygiene / grooming is a must!
4. Document your style journey.

i agree so much about having clothes that actually fit you properly. for the longest time i could never find pants that fit me and were my style so i got pants that were my style, but two sizes too big. it just made my outfits look bad and looked weird.

When I shop for clothes it’s like I have a mental block on what I should buy ultimately leading to not buying it at all. I live in NYC and walking the streets you see so many cool fits and here I am wearing majority black.

Great points, I'd also add that copying other people, or even some runway (not exact pieces, but the ideas they display) is a good way to learn styling. Yes of course you will wear some stuff you might not enjoy a year (or week) later, but you will learn from trying.

I loved this video you’re doing gods work lol! I’d also say that getting your favorite clothes tailored (if you can afford it) is a great way to look more polished. I love getting dresses and skirts taken in at the waist to make it look like they were made for me. It costs me ~$15 per piece, and it’s a great hack for when thrifted clothes are a little too big.

The biggest problems with measurements is that sizes are all different in all brands even if the measurements seem like yours. It's especially hard to shop online when you need to try many things on before you find what fits you.

The problem is with waist measurements on trousers is they're often inaccurate. I can fit a 32 in some brands and a 36 in others.

I’ve been into fashion for years and my styles changed all the time. I love seeing my change of style. I see old photo of my style love some aspects and hate other aspects.

man this video made me wanna make a vid about this too!!
1. indigo jeans (has the most utility of any clothing item. item one must be pants. a person isnt dressed without pants)
2 quality plain tshirt. recommend black or white
3 canvas sneaker.
4 three piece suit.
5 white dress shirt
6 chelsea boot.

with these 6 item you have an insane amount of optionality. everything here works with everything else here and i cant think of a better basis for a capsule wardrobe.

When I first started my fashion journey, I kind of jumped quickly into wearing unique pieces which was cool at the time but now I kind of dress more Basic not because I like it so much but rather because of insecurities about my body and stuff. I’ve had a long battle with finding pants that fit perfectly but I’m starting to get the hang of it

The problem for me is just the vast disparity between my measurements, the stated measurements on the products, and the actual measurements when measured. How do they get away with this?

Really smart video. I'm an old man and have always been interested in style, beyond fashion. I worked in an industry that was extremely superficial and needed to build a personal brand to maintain credibility without going broke by investing in the occasional (usually 2nd hand) item by Prada or Zegna or Armani, but mostly got by in black t-shirts and black jeans for the better part of 30 years in the film industry. I like the way you approach the subject. I suppose to some degree I still believe in style as a form of personal expression, even beyond the outrageous corporate brainwashing and materialism we're faced with every day.

Really appreciate your content and the research, critical analysis and overall thoughtfulness that goes into it all! You touched on this a bit already, but what I would love to learn more about (whether in video specifically dedicated to this or maybe interwoven in different videos over time) are your thoughts on self-love and the emotional, mental, psychological and social components that go into style. I think there's so much to be said about how much learning to know and love one's self is a fundamental part of any style journey, yet feels like an often missed conversation or isn't as central to conversations about style as it could/should be.

Anyway much respect!

i just realized that clothing fitting you being the first rule of fashion has a double meaning: fitting you as in measurements and fitting you as in personality

I LOVE the example of the woman @7:25 mark! She has a bold, beautiful, colorful style; and I am sooo here for it!

You're right about the fit! I tried on a skirt last night and noticed that it bulges out on the sides...I don't like it and my view of the entire fit was ruined because of it. On the opposite end, I don't like anything too tight and my confidence increased when I started wearing baggier clothing.

Had to learn the fit thing. I started hitting the gym 3 years ago. And just recently a year ago got into fashion. Realized how stupid I look in skinny jeans weighing 240. When I was 140 it was okay. I’m 6’4 btw.
