Spot on. Judge Ito constantly did this - he would rule to try and appeal both sides, and was criticised for it at the time. He would, as the saying goes, "split the baby", in reference to King Solomon. He lost control of the trial because he was unable to make distinct, concise, and definitive rulings, without concession.
He seemingly wanted to avoid being criticised by the defense, and to a lesser extent by the prosecution. In doing so his performance was criticised by everybody.

Here's a funny thing. If you watch John Travolta's performance as Robert Shapiro, you'll see a pretty good Lorne Michaels impression.

Chris Farley as F Lee Bailey was outstanding.

Mike Myers breaking was awesome because his Beavis and Butthead chuckle fit the joke like…a glove…

I was just a toddler then, but it’s crazy to see how back then a trial of the murder of two people became a joke

As a 20 year old watching and reading about all of this 25 years after the situation, it’s crazy to see that this trial was like a reality show, that anybody even remotely involved became a sort of mini celebrity, household names. Even the judge. The witnesses, prosecutors, etc. Seeing what Marcia Clarke went through on the FX show about this trial, I felt pretty bad. Ranting about her hair on daytime television? Who gives a fuck?

In a way it’s all very ridiculous, even SNL making jokes seems ridiculous, seems like pre-9/11 the country really just sat around twiddling their thumbs watching reality TV

I'm pretty impressed that a man of European decent successfully managed to pass off as Judge Ito long enough to be at the center of this skit.

My favourite documentary on this case is the absolutely brilliant OJ Simpson: Made in America. Puts the whole trial in complete context. Not being American, I never understood why the acquittal was so controversial. As a teenager casually acquainted with the case, I thought he was innocent and that's why he got off. As a young adult going into the facts of the case, I knew it had to be him and he got away with it because the prosecutors were dumb. Having seen Made in America, it's eye opening how the law and justice system is so easily manipulated and how it seemed for the first time that powerless people had a chance to make a point. However, that point was made at the expense of two innocent victims and I'm glad that the civil suit against OJ was successful.

Why does mark mckinney's outfit and hair change part way though and then back again? I'm guessing parts were taken from a dress rehearsal?
