Arm Sues Qualcomm Over Nuvia CPU!

preview_player
Показать описание
When Qualcomm bought Nuvia in January 2021 it needed to renegotiate Nuvia's license with Arm. Arm and Qualcomm couldn't strike a deal, so Arm was forced to terminate Nuvia license. According to Arm this means that the laptop CPU that Qualcomm is designing is unauthorized!

Sorry about the sub-par audio everyone. There was an audio recording issue with this one. The next one will be better. If you have seen my previous videos you know that this isn't a general set up issue, I don't need to buy a tie-mic, or add echo dampening or whatever. This was a one-off problem that won't happen again. Thanks for your support and understanding 👍👍

This is going to cost Qualcomm an ARM and a leg.

I know who is winning this lawsuit…Apple. Everyone else is losing until this is resolved.

Qualcomm clearly decided to use this business takeover as an opportunity to test the legal strength of Arm’s contracts, and there willingness to defend them.
Microsoft V Apple Windows V macOS! Could last year's..

This whole lawsuit seems like a negotiation tactic, especially considering they’re still doing other business together.

in other words arm says that if u buy a car and marry someone that already had a car you can't use the car of the other or even your own car but buy a new car??? that's ridiculous.

IMO this lawsuit sets the precedent for more companies to focus on RISC-V custom designs instead of ARM. Software that was adopted to ARM can just as easily adopt to RISC-V perhaps even more so (i.e. move from ARM to RISC-V even simpler than a move from x86 to ARM).

Lots of armchair analysis on this one, but given the way the problem is described, I think it will truly come down to the wording of these corporate license agreements. Everything will be dictated by that and how clever the lawyers were in drafting all this up.

Qualcomm should have clarify and reached a license agreement with ARM prior to the purchase of Nuvia. Lawyers failed to do their due diligence.

This is all quite entertaining considering Qualcomm's predatory licensing history. i.e. cellular modems, etc.

I've been anticipating this video Gary!

My guess is that it does not explicitly state in the licence agreement that design work done under one licence is prohibited from being used under another licence. Arm's argument must be that it is implied... Otherwise, Qualcomm would have no case.

Battle of the patents and licenses, only the lawyers win.

Greedy big business vs greed big business, this is why we need more companies that can compete with these monopolist companies and if possible reduce the strength/ remove patent laws.

1 minute into the video and I feel the mic/audio quality is little off.

Very well put. Love your channel, keep doing what you're doing! Arm didn't sue people often, if I was a betting man, I'd bet on Arm being correct.

6:15 "and you are not allowed to use any of the technology created by Nuvia" What? How can you defend that? ARM can't require people forget what they've learned. ARM can't compel a company to delete their own data. Nuvia could have created a patch file that contains only their changes to the ARM source materials, call it 100% original work. Then apply the patch to Qualcomm's source materials. ARM is in the wrong here. They keep hanging on to the "licenses do not transfer" aspect of the contract. Qualcomm doesn't need to transfer the license because they have their own. Qualcomm purchased knowledge and employee contracts. Qualcomm used their knowledge and their workers to create a chip design with their license. I've heard nothing to suggest any different.

Feel like room you are recording in is reflecting the sound. The sound does sound different at least.
