Fans in Iceland are overjoyed about their incredible win in the Euro Cup soccer tournament, none more so than the man who called the game on TV.

Watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert weeknights at 11:35 PM ET/10:35 PM CT. Only on CBS.

---
Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

Island has only 76 professional soccer players to select the squad from. 8% of the whole population went to France to cheer for their team. David Alaba (Defender from Austria) is worth more than the whole squad of Iceland. They knocked out the Netherlands to qualify. The Netherlands are ranked #14 in the World and missed their first big tournament in 14 years because of this. All but one of the names in the 23-men squad end with -son (Exception: Gudjohnsen).

The thing with soccer/football is that goals don't come cheap. It is hard, you struggle and have to work for it. A country lives and dies on a single goal that will be remembered for generations to come. Football is not a game, it is the representation of life itself.

As an Austrian... I'm not too happy... although I'm also a fan of Iceland... beautiful country, so I wish them success in the tournament. :)

On a related note, Iceland is almost entirely run on green energy such as hydro and lots of GEOTHERMAL energy which is an amazing accomplishment.

Ahh, this is why I love football (soccer, whatever you wanna call it), it can bring a small nation that nobody cares about such as Iceland, and make them the cover on all the newspapers in Europe the next day after a huge win like this. Football brings people together!

they misspelled "football" in the title lol

Pretty incredible what Iceland manages to do with just 320k people. Hats off to them. Denmark has about 17 times more people (yes, still a small country) and our national team sucks and aren't even at the European Championships.

Apparently after the game, all of Iceland decided to go to The Late Show.

I think I read that 8% of their population were in the stadium watching the game. Crazy small country.

Omg this commentator was so happy what a great moment for Iceland. Anyone else see the while video or are you still arguing about which word to use to describe the sport? Why does that even matter?

It's call passion, something that it's only found in Football. Something the US will never understand in the sport.
