I have lived in Hilo all my 70 year life except for three years of college on Oahu and 4 years of professional school in Oregon. I have also traveled abroad to Europe, South America, Asia, Canada, Alaska and at least half of the contiguous lower 48 states. Yes you can retire here! First, have no debt. Second, learn the language. Third, learn the culture. Finally, do not expect it to be like the mainland, to survive here you must add to the islands. If you just take, the islands will reject you and send you back to wherever.
