Ukrainian army fighting in the city will only bring more destruction to the city. If they cannot win the battle or are greatly outnumbered, then they should withdraw or surrender and spare civilian lives caught in the cross fire or by accidental missile strikes. Staying alive to fight another day is the ultimate military strategy.

The Ukrainians are not "clawing back territory", they retook some territory during an unexpected counterattack, but these gains have ben reversed already. And if Selensky has to get himself into a zone that is essentially a firing zone for the Russian bombers and long range artillery, in order to motivate his troops, the situation must be truly dire (though I don´t believe he truly visited Lysychansk).

Keep the troops there and repeat Mariupol

or, the reasonable option, make the soldiers fall back to a better position and reduce the length of the front line... possibly having to give up the S-Donetsk
