Played at the 1959 Trooping the Colours for the slow inspection of the line. Nice tune for that purpose too!

King William IV, the Sailor King, was the son of George III and brother of George IV, reigning from 1830 until 1837. He has particular significance for the Coldstream Guards as he is believed to have presented the two State Colours held by the regiment. These Colours are carried by Guards of Honour (other than when formed from the Queen's Guard) mounted on Her Majesty The Queen on State occasions and are normally kept at Regimental Headquarters in London.

The First State Colour, which is crimson, bears the Order of The Garter and has a Sphinx in each corner. In the centre, underneath the Garter Star, on a blue scroll, is the word "Egypt". The Battle Honours of Lincelles, Talavera, Barrosa, Peninsula and Waterloo are also shown. The Second State Colour is similar. However, the word "Egypt" is not in

blue and there are three additional Battle Honours: Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol. The composer of this slow march is thought to be John Monro (1786-1851), a pianist and composer born in Edinburgh who wrote a 'Complete Introduction to the Art of Playing on the Pianofote' in 1819 and has a number of compositions held in the British Library.

"Sailor Billy" was a great relief to the GBP after the excesses of his brother George IV.
