Located on the banks of the Mur River on the edge of the Alps, Graz is Austria's second-largest city after Vienna, with around 330,000 inhabitants. About 50,000 of them are students, as Graz has no less than six universities. The city is associated with celebrities such as Johannes Kepler, Erwin Schrödinger and Nikola Tesla. Its historic center (Altstadt) is one of the best-preserved city centers in Central Europe. In 1999, the city's historic center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Graz was named the European Capital of Culture in 2003 and the City of Cuisine in 2008.
