Insta360 ONE R – HDR Video Test
In this Video I test, how good the HDR Video function of the Insta360 ONE R really is. In the ONE R introducing video Insta360 shows a short sequence of the HDR function. In my opinion this looks amazing, so I tried it out myself. I took my Insta360 ONE R with the 4K Module, set the resolution to 4K/30fps – the codec to H.265 and recorded some comparison videos with the HDR and Standard Video function.
In the video you see the results of my test!

The HDR video function in some cases gives you better results than the standard video. For example in this Shots: Here you can see that the HDR video gives you more details in bright areas.
But In some cases I think the Standard Video is better then the HDR Video.

In summary I can say the following:
The HDR Video function of the Insta360 ONE R is a nice feature. In hard light situations you can get better results but don’t expect miracles. In one of my next videos I’m going to test the standard video with the LOG Profile. Let’s see if I can get better results in difficult light situations than the HDR Video function. Tested HDR video, failed to upload to youtube in HDR. WHY?!? HDR is a color space. Rec.709 is standard. Rec.2020 is HDR. This video is in Rec.709.

Thanks for this comparison, it's useful. I've been using One R for 6 months (mostly with 360 mod) and have found that HDR video is not suitable for action footage and also you need to avoid the strange artifacts if you have a direct view of the sun in your frame. with HDR video the sun will appear like a blob of big pixels. I do not use it in general.

IMO the HDR mode makes the video look worse than SDR in your examples.

This video goes to show a terrible failure of the Insta360 "HDR" mode: this isn't an HDR video. It's not encoded in HDR. It's fake HDR. The X4 also will not export a real HDR encoded video.
