I mean to be fair, Takumi's AE86 from Initial D is using a race engine after the original engine blew up haha

Even Keiichi Tsuchiya, THE Drift King and most possibly the biggest AE86 "Ambassador" admits the car is not a fast car, but that's not the point of it.

What makes the AE86 great is because it is the perfect car to learn car control. While it lacks power, the car's ability to maneuver overcomes that.

Speaking of Keiichi Tsuchiya, his personal AE86 dubbed "Super Mame" now uses a modified 7AGE engine producing around 220-240hp.

It's awesome to see fellow Toyota enthusiasts here in Colorado. I feel that we are kinda rare here. I commute in my turbo swapped 1991 MR2 down here in Colorado Springs.

This was an affordable, stylish, efficient car back in the day. It was basically a 2-door economy car with a sporty body to appeal to younger buyers. Cars like this were a dime a dozen in the 80s and 90s. Cheap fun. Nowadays, they're just not making cheap, fun cars like this anymore. I think the last of those types of cars died off with the Scion brand. The closest types of cars you'll find now are either affordable 4-doors or higher performance 2-doors with an MSRP thousands higher than economy cars. Sad times. It's funny/interesting to see the perspective of a younger generation who don't seem to realize all this and view good visibility and a belt line low enough to rest your arm on the window sill comfortably as "driving a bubble". The tiny windows trend is a very recent trend in the last 15yrs or so. I'm honestly hoping it dies off so we can better see out of our cars again. I like an airy cabin, not a claustrophobic one. Bring back fun, cheap cars!

I had an 87 Corolla GTS (red, like this one, but a notchback) back in the early '90s. I loved driving that car - the engine was a screamer. Thanks for the memories!

The exhaust valve info is incorrect, the valve he ment to talk about is in the engineered intake manifold

Each cylinder has 2 inlet runners, half of which have a vacuum-assisted butterfly valve that blocks it's path sub 4, 200 RPMs or thereabouts called the T-VIS(Toyota Variable Induction System). This causes air down in the powerband to flow mostly thru one of the two intake valves with some air being deflected down the second valve to promote asymmetric flow inducing in cylinder fuel mixture swirling & higher velocity airflow prompting better cylinder filling whilst using large relatively high lift cams not ment for regular driving

This system actually had airflow similar to what Honda's DC5 VTEC K20 powered Integra Type R does before it "comes on cam", as that iteration of Honda's VTEC system also(unbeknownst to most)also had asymmetric airflow down lower in the revs where one valve was getting more air thru & the other less promoting higher; velocity, fuel mixing, cylinder filling, just as how Toyota's T-VIS system achieved in the early 1980's, even if the mechanisms were different both systems offered superior low down drivability then other compromised DOHC 4 Valves of the times

That said many Toyota(even back then)do feature a passive valve in the muffler, but it's more of a spring loaded pressure flap, but I'm sure that isn't what he was attempting to refer to, I'm pretty sure even Tercels & Prius have that flap, & no it isn't coming on at any RPM that stuff is passive as I said & I believe many manufacturers probably include that in their exhaust for many reasons

This doesn't get touched on in the video, but the Corolla lineup was odd back then. If you bought a plain old Corolla, you got a FWD car with (as noted) the single-cam engine. If you bought a Corolla GTS, you got a rear-drive car with the twin-cam engine - a completely different car with the same model name.

The Ae86 is the chasis code none of them were sold as AE86, corolla in the states and sprinter or levin in the Japanese market.

I loved my 85 twin cam. It had about 300k on it when I sold it like 18 yrs ago. Had a header, and I think a greddy exhaust, center force clutch.

A friend of mine back in high school had one of these brand new. It was a GTS and I remember it had gold rims. Don't see too many of these today. Cars were pretty slow back then.

Almost bought ona these for my first car, and i passed and bought an 89 z24 instead, cant complain that car was awesome and lasted years but man if id only of known what theyd be worth today, it was 1200 bucks and in nice shape about 150k on it.

When they first came out, they were considered turds. The rear wheel drive aspect was the only saving grace when the drift kings took it over. The Fwd FX16 Corolla was faster and outsold the AE86.
