What toxic family tradition did you break that cost you everything?

First time I changed one of my Nonna’s recipes, I thought my mom would have a coronary. You’d have thought she just watched me drown the family dog. And then she tried it and realized that it was better. And that I’d tweaked it so my diabetic dad could have cake too.
The aunties and uncles were still appalled but the cousins were down.
I still have all of the original recipes in her original book and made my own with the altered recipes. I don’t think Nonna would be upset with me for changing her recipes to improve on them or make them more friendly for those with dietary restrictions. Her outlook was that food is meant to be shared and enjoyed by all, and if changes needed to be made, so be it.

It always surprises me how petty people can get over the simplest things. Like you’re really gonna disown someone over a cake? Husband is allergic and even if he wasn’t it’s their wedding! They can do whatever they want! If I ever get married I can foresee some issues cause I’m not a very religious person and a good chunk of my family is, I don’t want some big church wedding.
