Water is a prominent feature in this area, sitting between the Welbeck estate Lakes and Clumber Lake. The village we find here was once a Roman settlement, and was deep within Sherwood Forest. In 1848 it was written that it was part of the Hatfield division of the Bassetlaw wapentake. The township contained 193 inhabitants and 1,516 acres of land. The Common Lands were not enclosed here until 1818.

The Duke of Portland was the sole owner and lord of the manor. Strange as it may seem, it was once a centre of the iron industry with forges here from the 1650s until 1783 – about a mile west of where the village is now. A forge here was developed by George Sitwell. It was powered by the River Poulter.

The church of Saint Giles is an unusual shape and dates back to the early 12th century. Parish records date back to the 1530s. The church was considered a Chapel of Ease until 1867 and closed for services in 2017. It features a double sun dial that is situated in the south western angle of the main wall above the porch. This often causes peculiar effects due to the building being not truly orientated.

The most obvious natural landmark here is the River Poulter, which flows in an Easterly direction through the village towards Clumber Park. Whilst the iron forge may now no longer be here, what is still here is a huge dam, a Welbeck estate lake in the Poulter Valley. There are theories that some of the remains of the forge are submerged within the waters here. As well as regulating the flow of the River Poulter, the dam provided the water supply for the local Water Meadows.

This is the small yet so very interesting CARBURTON.

CARBURTON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

- At the start of the video, there's a pair of cottages in front of me and to my right, the nearest of the two used to be the home of one of Carburton CofE mixed infants/junior schools

- On the opposite side of the road there's a track that leads to the site of the old Roundhouse/Clumber Kennels, and a bit further along the road leading away from Carburton Lodges there was a wide entry to a gate and the racing stables

So much "ENCLOSED" land and lake in these English shires ( Once common land and water) - Read " The Book of Trespass" by Nick Hayes and discover why and how "WE" became barred from common land and freedom to roam :-)
