One of the care homes worst-hit by COVID-19 is now being forced to shut down.

At Newfield Nursing Home in Sheffield, 25 people died with the virus after more than 110 residents and staff members tested positive.

Its 38 nurses and carers are facing redundancy following a sharp drop in the number of residents in the home.

“I’m 85 and I’m homeless,” says Shirley Scott, the last remaining resident.

Care home workers are the real front line workers, coping with individuals who likely will die from this virus. My heart goes out to the nurses and carers out there. The sounds of people gasping for air. It is haunting. Watching an 85 year old lady cry about being made homeless is the most heartbreaking thing I have ever seen. I cant believe what 2020 has become, so many nightmares come true.

Put the government in a care home see how they like it

I've worked in care homes, this is nothing to do with the government. In my experience Most of them are private and the people that own them are millionaires they have always run them understaffed for maximum profit while holidaying in their second homes in Spain. Again just the experience I've had but to blame the Government for their lack of preparedness for this crisis is disingenuous.

The pressure and stress that these carers must feel on the daily is absolutely immense. I feel so sad for them and how they’re being screwed over

Jesus Christ, over £650 every week!!!! I could pay my rent and bills and on top of that look after my mum in a 2 bed flat full time for £2, 500 a month! And take £1, 200 minimum wage for myself! I think there absolutely must be a lot of money and profit being skimmed off by useless people!

England treats its elderly people like they are rubbish or an inconvenience. Even the war veterans are forgotten and left alone to starve & worry about their day to day livelihood when they fought for this country and worked hard for it. These are people that build most of the infrastructure in this country. The elderly don’t even ask for a lot they just want live their last golden years quietly. The govt just wasted £39billion in the last six months paying workers that are healthy & capable to just stay at home and the elderly were not even considered. Not to mention the billions that are allocated to taking care of migrants. That is disgusting and upsetting. The public also sponsor millions to a lot of mismanagement foundations and the cash appears to be falling into a bottomless pit. This govt has a lot of money and the proof is in their expenditures lately and must fix this for our elderly people.

Its down to the care homes managers. Let me explain. My mother works in a care home, she has worked in the industry for over 30 years. Since this virus happened the home my mother works at have been good at keeping the virus out untill a month and a half ago. They brought in a resident from another home. They tested her for covid but rather than wait for the results they just took her in, turned out she was tested positive. They prioritised wealth over health.

Now there is another side to this. This resident was 97 years old and she has actually recovered. So either the test was bull**** or the virus is not as bad as they make it out to be.

Don't grow old in Sheffield, Jesus! Shame on that council and their social care director. Who no doubt would blame central government. Disgusting

If it’s underfunded why do so many big companies set up or take over care homes? There are immense profits to be made that’s why! Profits off of the hardest ever working generation!
