Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing the misunderstood origins of Dementors- the Wizarding World’s enigmatic wraith-like creatures known for guarding Azkaban and sucking out SOULS. Specifically, we’ll be taking a look at MY theory on how Dementors were first created. We'll also be looking at a theory for how their population continues to grow.

Let's dive in.

I don't think that Ekrizdis is the one who created the first Dementors. Let's re-read that passage again: "Those who entered to investigate refused afterwards to talk of what they had found inside, but the least frightening part of it was that the place was infested with Dementors. This reads, at least to me, like Dementors predate the creation of Azkaban, of the island but that an infestation of them was disturbingly unique to Azkaban.

We also know that they breed like a fungi and I think this might be the actual origin of the Dementors. Like a house that suffered from moisture problems can become a breeding ground for mold, so might a place that has been tainted by dark magic performed between its walls, that has seen tremendous amounts of pain, misery and despairs, breed Dementors. Once they are there, they will create an environment where their kind thrives. Ekrizdis' vile experiments with dark magic might have been of such primordial evil that it turned Azkaban is the most Dementor-infested place on the globe, as where magical torture dungeons might have been known to spawn a Dementor or two, Azkaban Castle bringing forth thousands...

Perhaps dementors were a side effect of Ekrizdis’ experiments. Similarly to how Peeves was never alive, and is simply an accumulation of the chaotic energy of all the students that called Hogwarts home. Maybe the first dementor was an accumulation of all the anguish, despair and torment that occurred within Azkaban.

I’m on board with the theory. I’ve always thought that since dementors were depression personified maybe the first was created by a failed experiment where the wizard did not want to feel emotions anymore and tried to remove their emotions but instead became the demon

I think the first dementer is Ekrezdis himself. He dived too deep into depravity until he was swept away by its darkness and tranformed into the very magical personification of despair.

The name Dementor is probably derived from the Italian verb dimenticare or its Latin root. Dimenticare means to forget. So I think that those who are truly forgotten inside Azkaban and have forgotten themselves, will turn into Dementors.

Dementors could be some kind of super Inferi, which would explain why they can't be killed, because they're technicvally already dead and soulless, but they crave the life and joy they once had when alone, which is why they drain it from others.

Why not do a theory on the Diadem of Ravenclaw holding the curse on the defense against the dark arts position? All the horcrux's had dark powers. And Dumbledore admitted to Harry that since he turned Tom Riddle down for the job, no defense against the dark arts teacher lasted more than a year. But one should ask: "How do you curse a job position? " Most people think that once Voldemort was finally dead, the curse broke. But if that was the case, why did the curse remain when he lost his powers? Voldemort was alone for many years, neither alive nor dead. So you would think that the defense against the dark arts job curse would've broken, but it wasn't. Somehow, the curse on a job position continued. We know voldemort hid the Diadem of Ravenclaw in the room of requirement. A place not many knew about. The diadem of Ravenclaw was a horcrux. A piece of Voldemort's soul hid inside it. The diadem was hidden inside Hogwarts. Therefore, that's what affected the position. Voldemort's soul had to simply target the new teacher. Look how powerful the diary was.

I like where your theory is going. In the event that someone were mistreated badly enough that their soul would damage beyond repair, they would seek a new soul, while at the same time trying to make the world feel their pain.

What if Dementors were more like Armus from Star Trek the Next Generation. In Star Trek, Armus was all the negative emotions and evil intent that an alien race had purged from themselves. It manifested itself into a sentient puddle of black goo that was the personification of pure evil.

What if Ekrezdis was experimenting trying to find a way to purge his own madness. He experimented on on sailor first before trying it on himself. He thought he had it figured out and attempted to purge his madness. He succeeded but the the madness magically manifested itself into the first Dementor and it killed Ekrezdis.

Dementors seemingly cant be destroyed, but they can procreate. Not sure why wizardkind arent worrying about finding a way to destroy them

I had to grab a coat while listening to this one. Following along with your thoughts, I can’t help but wonder if Rowling was influenced in her creation of soul-harvesting Dementors by the Grim Reaper which is often associated with the Black Death which plagued Europe during the 14th century.
The thoughts, arguments, and reasoning behind your theories are very well supported, convincing enough to compel both magical and non-magic hearers alike. You’d make a formidable Professor at Hogwarts.

I always thought that Dementors were the results of some dark experiments on Lethifolds. As Lethifolds are affected by the Patronus charm, it maybe that they are related in an unnatural way. Maybe trying to cross a Lethifold with another creature. Experimentation on Magical Creatures is banned and the Island would've been a good place to do it.

He also could have been experimenting on an Obscurus and altered it enough to make a dementor.

Assuming that Ekrizdis creater dementors is false imo. Dementors have appeared in ancient history (story of Illyius and Raczidian) as has the patronus charm. No where does it claim that Ekrizdis created dementors, only that when Azkaban island was discovered, dementors were the LEAST frightening thing on it. Ekrizdis had done/made other terrible things there. It's more likely that Azkaban attracted a bunch of dementors due to it's dark magic. Also when Lupin describes dementors he says they infest thr foulest places. Meaning many places not just azkaban.

I remember you making a video on this years ago (I watched it in lockdown so maybe 2021 or 2020). I think it’s good to have a refresher video on this though. Keep it up!

Seeing as they seem to be immortal and unkillable, thought still able to multiply, this seems to me to imply that the end of the world might be coming. Unless the wizarding world finds a way to permanently entrap or destroy them, they will eventually be too many of them to contend with.

I think that Azkaban was infested with dementors even before his arrival there. He was a dark wizard yes, but perhaps it were the dementors which made him mad. Maybe they're just a humanoid embodiment of a certain concept, like Vilas with beauty or boggarts with fear...

Avada Kedavra reaping the soul out of the body seem to contradict the effect of dementor's kiss.
And if a dementor is a kind of a corupted soul would Avada Kedavra work on them?
And what othe than Patronus charm methods of dealing with them was Snape talking about when critisizing Lupin's teaching?
