Wonder by R.J. Palacio Part 5: Justin. ASL Reading Guide, Lesson Plan, and Materials

ERCOD has created a series of videos to introduce each section of Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The introduction serves to excite students about the upcoming section, give some background, and provide questions for students to consider as they read.

Born with a severe facial deformity, August (Auggie) Pullman was homeschooled until the 5th grade. The story is told from different points of view as Auggie ventures into the new world of public school. He wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid, but the students at Beecher Prep can't see beyond his extraordinary face. The story begins from Auggie's point of view and switches to tell the story from the perspective of his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others as they struggle with their own feelings of empathy, compassion, acceptance, and friendship.

Wonder was a New York Times bestseller for over 5 years in a row (with over 140 weeks as #1) and has received national and international awards. It was included in Time magazine's 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time (January 2015), and USA Today's Top 100 bestsellers. The book was adapted into a movie of the same name and was released in November of 2017.

Justin was soon to meet Auggie. It was going to be his first time and he was a little nervous. Via had already explained what he looked like and everything. And he was nervous but he was ready. So now the time came. And as he approached Auggie, what he did was to make sure he kept a straight face because he knew everyone was looking at him. He said 'Hello. Nice to meet you.' And he was concerned because everybody was watching. So now Via, Justin, and Auggie and their parents all went out to eat. And as they were sitting there eating and enjoying themselves and chatting, Justin sat there and he saw the waiter come up and begin to take their order. And as he went to each person when he got to Auggie, his face made a strange expression when he got to Auggie. Justin did not like that at all. He did not like the way that the waiter looked at Auggie. Justin decided to just ignore the waiter. And decided it's not important. So as he ate, Via's parents asked him questions about the play that he was involved in. And he was so nervous and he has what are called tics." Do you know what that means? What are those?
