Giants or Npehilim were once believed to have existed, a belief particularly associated with the Essenes - a group of mystical Jewish people that are believed to be responsible for the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Dead Sea scrolls provide several accounts of giants, most notably, the Book of Giants where the giant offspring of angels and mortal women nearly destroy the world.

Here is a crazy theory. I recently talked to some one who said angelic beings could control their size to some extent. These giants that were Nephilim could shrink themselves down to normal human size to mate with human woman. These children would be about the same size of a human baby when born, but later on learn to alter their size to be much taller than a human being.

Female giants are mentioned in Norse Mythology. One name I remember is Angrboda, who was the mother of the demi-god Loki. And the gods and goddesses of Norse mythology were divided into two groups, which warred with each other. I forget the names of the two groups! But one group was led by Odin and considered the higher of the two groups. The other group of deities, the giants, were considered more associated with the earth, a lower class of deities. A giantess goddess of one of such group was Hella, goddess of the dead, a dark moon goddess.
