IMPORTANT FIX: I was not aware of the correct process to install OBS dependencies on Wayland. You need to install "xdg-desktop-portal-wlr" to activate the screen capture via pipewire for OBS. After installing it, the option is there and the screen capture works. Take that in consideration if you wish to use wayland and capture content. Thanks @DoM3GaM3sTM for sharing your feedback! Linux community is great!

Wayland is not ready yet. It is not far from being ready, but I don't see any reason to switch yet. X11 works find for my use case, and causes me no head aches.

Wayland can flicker constantly on KDE desktop and in-game on Nvidia (with a 2080ti). This effect makes me think my IPS panel is dying... other than that its 90% usable on Arch

KDE has a option in the systemsettings to enable glovbal shortcuts with any X11 applications like discord

NVIDIA driver is the culprit. In a system with a really old GPU card, the tumbleweed installation picks up, not the NVIDIA driver, but the Nouveau driver by default. Wayland works well with Nouveau. I got rid of the the Nvidia GeForce 960. The system took the the on-board intel GPU. Wayland works fine with the intel on-board GPU.

with me doing photography and color grading 10bit video on davinci resolve wayland needs proper color management with the ability to load icc color profiles per monitor after calibration and profiling with color meter. Wayland currently lacks this ability but under xorg with colord it works just like under windows and mac.

Most of the problems are due to the fact that software developers have refused for many years to correctly implement Wayland, for fear of change, investment or any problem for the developer and the companies. Wayland is the future of the GUI in Linux, we must try to adopt it and push so that the migration from xorg to wayland is completed in the shortest time possible.

How does Wayland handle things like VNC or FFMPEG streaming from your application window?

I used Fedora Core 38 and I enabled and installed the rpmfusion 470xx nvidia driver. My OBS works in both X11 and wayland. When using pipewire you can to press the settings and share your display. What seems to be the case for me is if you sleep and resume, nvidia-uvm messes up and obs capture goes black after a few seconds, so I just rmmod nvidia-uvm and modprobe nvidia-uvm on resume.

I'm on X11 with Kubuntu 23.10. AMD iGPU 780M + Nvidia dGPU 4060M.
*7840HS / 780M has no OpenCL or Radeon HIP support in Ubuntu 23.10
*In iGPU mode, no Optix, Cuda or OpenCL can be used from RTX4060.
*Phantom power draw from RTX4060 in iGPU mode, can only be fixed with Nouveau driver.
*Nouveau driver has no Optix, Cuda or OpenCL.
*Optix, Cuda and OpenCL need Nvidia mux switch on dedicated GPU.
* Driver can not be switched when optimus is on iGPU.
* Any discrepancy between optimus and mux switch results infinity boot loop.
* Proprietary nvidia driver and 780M iGPU driver have different screen brightness and font size, so all the boxes get stretched and iscons moved around permanently.
* Driver update messes up the driver switching panel.
* All this changes need many restarts and hand fixing desktop layout. Consider time needed 30 minutes atleast.

What is Wayland? What is X11? It is all so strange. Im on LMDE 6 for thtee weeks and it makes me crazy. I cannot use my nice spec laptop for what I want it to use. 3D manipulation and 3D CAD, and printing. its Nvidia card + iGPU.

I have an RTX 3050 and kde plasma with x11 works terribly, everything lags. Gnome works well on x's in general, but not perfectly. On my Intel Iris laptop I have gnome with Wayland and everything works fine there. I tried Wayland with KDE Plasma and everything started working quickly, but there were various architects and glitches, and I can't get Gnome to work at all under Wayland.

a thing thats annoys me on x11 is the lock of lowest framerate on multiple monitors.

addressing vsync forced issue on wayland, on games i do get 'forced' vsync if i enable on some games however it improves from the stutter and all.
But on heaven benchmark and opengl gpu based benchmark, my rtx3060(at 80w, it has a config problem with ubuntu) gets up to 200fps on my 75hz display.
So i guess it just depends.

Man, I got this recommended to me right as we're finding out that Fedora is planning on dropping X11 support.

There are games and apps that just _don't run_ on Wayland. If Ubuntu or Debian ends up dropping support as well, thar's how you get most of the 76% on Desktop users to leave entirely. Wayland better get their shit together in terms of Nvidia support or there's gonna be massive issues.

For me Wayland is crucial even with Nvidia and their crappy drivers... Because Xorg don't play nice with my hardware, it feels like a 1950 Laptop when I use Xorg with my DE and Wayland miss some features and Nvidia support (It works but with Optimus like Xorg it's a PAIN ! ) Wayland also miss support from some apps like Discord.

Also Xorg doesn't have a proper fractional scaling. that I need if I want to see something on my laptop screen if connected to a monitor.

I'm in that situation for more than a year. Wayland is far from prefect but for me it's WAY (land) better than Xorg
