Flora Zhou, an assistant professor of accountancy at Georgia State University's Robinson College of Business, talks about firms' increasing pressure to implement effective internal whistleblowing systems in order to avoid potential SEC investigations, fines and other negative publicity associated with external whistleblowing. Her research suggests that penalties are more effective at inducing internal whistleblowing when employees expect their coworkers would do the same.
