I'm imagining two armies on either side of a river glaring angrily at each other for a month, and I can't stop giggling.

Genuinely one of the strangest and yet most important battles in history.

You should make one about how the Han Dynasty started because a sheriff was transporting prisoners and some managed to escape.
And because the penalty for allowing prisoners to escape was death he decided “screw it” and just freed the rest of the prisoners and led them in a rebellion against the government.

Crazy how a Wikipedia article out of all things can be so much more crazier than any fictional novel.

Exquisite taste in music, some would even call it "based".

Crossing a river that's frozen over while the other bank is controlled by an army with cannons seems... inadvisable.

Nice one, but I would not call this battle most important in a history of Russia. At that point Horde was already almost gone, Kazan, Astrakhan and Crimean khanates broke away, Kasimov as a vassal state of Moscow, not to mention new firearms and restored unity of the principalities. It was symbolic, but not that important battle, Horde was simply bound to lose anyway, even if Ugra standoff never happened

I love how Batorzig Vaanchig has just become the spokesman for Mongolia and historic Mongols.
Every time you want to invoke the Mongols you just play his Chinggis Khaan Magtaal.

One of the most overlooked events in the ending of the medieval period and the beginning of Early Modern Times

"... break the thin Russian line at any point. Ivan's best plan was to pull back and concentrate his force. On 26 October Ivan began moving troops from the Ugra northeast to Kremenskoye and then east to Borovsk. Here he had a good defensive position to protect Moscow and could strike in any direction if Akhmed chose to advance."

So both sides know well their capability and what could they do once the river is completely frozen. "Akhmed may have thought Ivan's withdrawal was a ruse to draw him into an ambush, a common steppe tactic. Even if there were no ambush, he would have to fight an army in a prepared position, or try to bypass it." Hence, he got a good reason to withdraw. Both sides leaders were good.

It's funny how Russia gained Independence from Mongolia but in the end Mongolia wanted to join Russia.

The image of 2 armies doing a intense stare contest just to wait for the river to freeze is pretty hilarious.
