Rediscovering Joy in Teaching by Unlocking 7 Keys to Magical Learning

Five years ago, Tisha Richmond realized that she had lost her joy as a teacher. She was tired, burned out, ready to become a barista.

But through a series of events she was able to rekindle her enthusiasm for teaching. It led to her discovery of what she calls the seven keys to unlocking magical learning.

Richmond’s turnaround began with her school’s announcement that it would be going 1:1 with iPads. That led Richmond to an edtech conference and the formation of a professional learning network that reinvigorated her professional life. They were transformative experiences that led to her seven keys to unlocking magical learning: Make students feel welcome and create a warm classroom community; be authentic with students and give them choice in their learning; gamify learning; be innovative; encourage creativity, curiosity and collaboration; seek authentic audiences for student work; and work to create a legacy by having an impact in students’ lives.

“When we have fun, when we live with passion and empower our students to do the same, we are leaving a legacy that will last forever,” she said.
