Last winter, I had sports practice at dawn. My college van would arrive at 3:30 in the morning, just as the city lay wrapped in sleep. I remember curling into my jacket, my feet shivering, breath visible in the cold air. The world was quiet, cloaked in a deep blue darkness. It was a 1.5-hour ride to college — long enough to drift between wakefulness and dreams.

One morning, as I nestled into the van seat and plugged in my headphones, a song began to play — one I’d never heard before. Minova. I liked it instantly. I added it to my playlist without even knowing the artist. Over the next few days, I played it on repeat. Again and again. It became the soundtrack to those mornings — the sleepy streets slipping past my window, the smell of winter, the faint glow of streetlamps trailing into the distance.

Sometimes I’d fall asleep with the song playing softly in my ears, the rhythm swaying me as the van bumped along the uneven road. Other times, I’d stay awake — exhausted, but somehow completely alive in that moment, watching the city stir ever so slowly.

That entire era of my life is defined by those songs. And whenever I hear Minova now, I’m pulled right back — to the cold, the quiet, the backseat of that van, my head occasionally thudding softly against the seat as the van sped up.

Since then, I’ve been an on-repeat listener. Still am. And now, I’m waiting until her next song drops. Magic, truly.
