"Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”⁣Fauré composed his much loved mass setting between 1887-1890, and saw this work as much for the living as for the remembrance of the dead. Removing the dread terror of the Dies irae, using instead its final couplet Pie Jesu, set as a tender number for solo soprano, he created a work of divine beauty and sublime tranquility, one of "happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than […] painful experience.”⁣

In the first half of the concert, we perform #Bach's cantata O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht, BWV118, along with #Barber's ever-popular and deeply moving Adagio for Strings.⁣. As well the Bach and the Barber, the first half features another work by #Fauré, his Cantique de Jean Racine.⁣
