I can't believe that there's no mention of Andreas Brehme in the 1990 World Cup Final. Under the circumstances, it has to be one of the greatest penalties of all-time. It was not simply a penalty in a World cUp Final - there was more to it than that. With the scoreline at 0-0, 84 minutes into the match, Voller is awarded a penalty. The Argentine players deliberately delayed the penalty for several minutes by surrounding and protesting to the referee, so that the taker would be more nervous. Brehme had not touched the ball for several minutes because of the stoppage, and there were almost a billion people watching. The Argentine goalkeeper Goikechea had already heroically gotten Argentina through 2 penalty-shootouts to reach the final.

The Germans' regular penalty-taker, Lothar Matthaus, didn't feel 100% confident about taking it, so when Beckenbauer asked the team if anybody else wanted it, Brehme raised his hand. It was a real bottle-job.
Years later, Brehme said that, during the several mnutes he had to wait before taking the penalty, the goal kept shrinking.
He was shaking in his boots, but you would never know that from the way he took it.

Brehme puts the ball on the spot. The referee blows the whistle. Goikechea goes early, and guesses the right way, but Brehme's placement is just too perfect to give him a chance. He rolled it into the net - a daisy-cutter with lots of topspin, surgically slotted into the bottom left corner. Brehme showed that he had ice in his fucking veins.
