True. Either extreme can be unhealthy.

When you’re obsessively looking at your body composition in the mirror, posting flex pics on Instagram stories daily, it’s obvious why it happens.

Then you go on your social media with algorithms pushing a bunch of jacked guys flexing in perfect lighting, where you are constantly comparing and wanting more for your physique.

I work out to have strength, longevity, bone density and of course a good physique. But I never chase unrealistic gains or goals, if you are in the gym you’re gonna look better than 95% of guys anyways and putting more work in than the majority of the population.

Why tf would I put all of this work in just to be unhappy about it? All the lifting, sweating, nutrition, preparation, good sleep, just to be unhappy about it? No thanks.

I think if you look at most great people in history, a lot of them either had trauma or were messed up in their own way. As a society we glorify it but if you are a grounded person, you rarely feel the urge to prove yourself and you love a normal/relaxed life(which is ok) and nobody hears about it. There is a price to pay

Yet Gymshark promoted athletes are probably all on the sauce. A bit hypocritical isn't it?

Body dysmorphia is rampant among men who take fitness to such extremes. It’s leading to premature death more and more frequently these days. I hope this conversation continues. There are far too many men struggling alone with external athleticism and internal illness.

That's why I never wanted to compete in those physique/fitness competitions. I knew I had the natural talent to become musclebound/jacked through natural strength. And then maintain definition and separation for years - building upon that foundation with a lot of gritty powerful work.

I also never counted calories, weighed food, weighed myself regularly, adhered to portions sizes or measured my body fat percentages!! I never did any of these common practices!! I didn't have to. I just trained hard and heavy and ate wholesome foods most of the time. I didn't restrict my intake.

I found this episode great but I really think Ben has a complete misalignment when it comes to this. He does not promote this concept through Gym Shark for mens health. He only promotes ripped and muscular men on his platform. No skinny / no dad bods / no normal looking lads.

Whereas in the womens space there is all shapes and sizes !

1 Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

i dont think everyone should have six pack abs
uh huh
says the guy who probably has abs all his life
coming from a previous overweight borderline obese dude, i was honestly pretty happy when i got shredded enough to see my 8 pack. Granted, i knew i couldn't stay like that for too long, not until i built up enough lean mass but still, it felt nice and i achieved a real personal goal of mine.

I experienced this exactly today, i was omw to the gym totally exhausted, and asked myself why am i doing this instead of resting if i already have my dream physique? What do i need to prove?

I agree but if you want to be the best and win competitions there are sacrifices that need to be made

That’s why I loved Jackie Chan as a kid he was the ultimate Natty . My Dad was a bodybuilder who also Natty and he was huge . He never did steroids and he put in more work than anyone else he looked better in my opinion too

Great point. I think the same can be said for make-up obsessed women and the like who are "attractive", sure, but are overly concerned with their looks. Deep down they rly think themselves ugly no matter what anyone tells them

No one ever said that high performance is healthy. And if someone did, they're wrong. It isn't. It has major risks. That's why only a really small portion of people subject themselves to it. You absolutely don't need to go to extremes to have a great physique. Regular dieting, exercising/weight training, discipline, consistency and long term mindset. It's all you need. No need for extremes.

I think this isn’t a knock on any group of people, rather, highlights that we can’t dismiss that mental health challenges all groups irrelevant of the judgments and assumptions we make when we use stereotypes.

Interesting perspective, but like if everyone could have a six pack would that not be dope 🧐💪
