Ireland is first country to ditch fossil fuels

Показать описание
In an effort to fight climate change, a large majority of lawmakers in Ireland recently voted in favour of fully divesting from fossil fuels, such as gas, coal and oil.
Ireland’s sovereign wealth fund of about €8 billion will, instead, be directed towards clean energy following the vote in January 2017.
This makes Ireland the first country to fully move away from fossil fuels.
The climate pledges agreed by 195 countries in Paris are to thank for this, and Ireland isn’t the only country to make big changes to benefit the environment.
Norway’s capital, Oslo, has taken about €8 billion away from fossil fuels as well. This is a big deal as the country was Europe’s largest holder of oil and gas reserves.
Sweden is also set to have a climate law in effect by January 1, 2018.
And China’s latest five-year plan on energy development is the most ambitious so far, including the building of the world’s biggest wind farm.
It’s safe to say that the divestment movement is catching fire across the globe, with more than $2 trillion redirected towards clean energy.
When we all work together and urge our governments to take a stance, we stand a fighting chance against climate change.
Share if you agree that sustainable energy is the future.
What do you think about these developments? Do you think other countries will follow suit? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
