Ka Huila Wai:
Keiki dance students ages 7-11 years of Kumu Hula Hiwa Bourne's Kuhai Halau O Ke Kukui Malamalama O Ka Hula dance to Ka Huila Wai, a song by Alfred Alohikea from Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's album Facing Future. This is the first hula dance they've learned using their implements (puʻili, ʻuliʻuli, and ipu) and their first time ever performing this hula dance song! Choreography by Kumu Hiwa and keiki class instruction by alakaʻi Kendall Kanoa Hawley.

Hula dance a form accompanied by chant (oli) or song (mele). It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. The hula dance dramatizes the words of the oli or mele in a visual dance form.

Hula dance costumes play a role in illustrating the hula instructor's interpretation of the mele. From the color of their attire to the type of adornment worn, each piece of an auana costume symbolizes a piece of the mele auana, such as the color of a significant place or flower. For slow, graceful hula dances, the hula dancers will wear formal clothing such as a muʻumuʻu for women and a sash for men.

Enjoy these keiki dancers. They enjoy their hula dance classes and hula dance with lots of joy and passion.
