I almost feel bad that the pandemic didn't really affect me that much. I've always tried to keep extra food for emergencies but after 9/11 I started to really make an effort to stock up extra foods. When the pandemic hit I actually didn't need to go out to buy any kind of food or any essentials like toilet paper for several months. I was living alone by that time and I didn't need to feed any of my family because they had all moved out of the state. I had one friend that called to see if I was in need of anything but I really wasn't. I did trade some of my homemade face masks for her family and she brought me some milk and some of her fresh eggs. So I really agree with you about picking up a few extra items every time you go to the store, even if all you have is a dollar. A can of soup or veggies for under a dollar will really add up. Thank you so much for all of your posts. I really look forward to all of your posts. Your smile and humor and excellent advice can always make me smile.

For 6 months I have been adding 2 or 3 items every week. Sometimes I just have $3. I am still stocking up. Your ideas are always welcome. Makes me think of something I forgot.

I've managed to put away 5 months worth of 'meals in a bag' that I put together. I use a similar method. 👍

Every penny counts in hard times. If I'm hungry, I can eat foods I don't like just to keep from starving. I try to buy foods I like, though.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom.😊

I suspect there are many folks out there who’d like to prep, but don’t know where to start and so they become fearful and overwhelmed. Your suggested plan makes so much sense and takes the intimidation factor out of the equation. Thank you so much for your common sense, upbeat way of teaching!❤🇺🇸

I have eaten canned meat that was once given out as" commodities " before food stamps came on the scene, this canned meat was over FORTY YEARS past the "best by" date on the can, the can was not swollen or leaking, the meat was still edible, and I suffered NO ill effects whatsoever...this was an experiment on my part, just to see how long certain canned meats would last past the "best by" date...when this world gooberment goes sideways, people can STILL find canned food in an abandoned warehouse...THINK ABOUT IT...

Homeowners + auto insurance wiped us out this month. So we have been living out of our pantry (and freezer and garden). It's just common sense.

Such a great idea. We have 10 people here and my pantry just saved us when my husband injured himself and was out of work for 9 weeks! You just never know what may happen, so having that bit of security can be the difference between being comfortable and very, very hungry.

Quinoa is a complete protein so a good option in your prepper pantry.

Thanks for your advice. My favorite place is clearance spot. I use my vaccum sealer and dehydrator, and I can. We have to do what we can to save for emergencies. I am a widow now and senior si if I have to have surgery or something I need to have easy meals. Have a blessed evening. 😊

You are right, everyone should find their local store's markdown/clearance area. I found 12 oz bags of China Doll Kidney Beans marked down to .22 cents a bag this week. The other local grocery had Classico Spaghetti Sauce on sale for $1.18 if you bought 5 jars. Bonus buy because the sauce is in Atlas canning jars!! Thanks Jinne for all you do for our community.

The Great Value salt is $1.59 at my Walmart. Just noticed it last week.

One of the things I discovered doing with my very expired lentils was to sprout them and add to salad and give to my chickens. Just an idea for everyone who may not want to eat expired food. Don't throw it away!

YES! SALES and clearances! People who say they stick with a list to save money are missing out. Our Kroger is often sent extra cases or cases of foods their store doesn't carry and they clearance them out. Last year we picked up many cans of corned beef for $2.50, regularly over $5 each. Stores always mark-down items they need to remove to make room for new products, or because they are changing the packaging, (usually down-sizing) or changing their contents.
I have seen us through MANY personal/family/weather emergencies being prepared.

I am single so I don’t have a large grocery bill but I still stock up on my usual items when on sale, and keep a back stock. I check expiration dates and use my vacuum sealer to separate large quantities. Every little bit helps
