Viking Funerals, Pagan Ship Burials - Vendel and Freyr

Following on from my last video about ship burials, I’d like to expand on the symbolic importance of the boat in the pagan rituals of Sweden.

This video looks specifically at Vendel in Uppland. Some people think that since the Uppland was in the kingdom of the Svea where Freyr was the primary ancestral god, that the boat burial rite might be related to him. His cult was prominent at nearby Gamla Uppsala
Frey had the magic boat Skíðblaðnir and was son of the sea god Njörðr.

The Ynglingar origin myth begins with the sea borne arrival of a divine descendent of Freyr and his father – both ship owning fertility gods.

The people buried here must have been important clan ancestors. At least 9 out of the 14 graves were reopened in antiquity – it is possible they were transferred to the church when it was built so as to fortify the Christian communal centre with the ancestral association.

good pronunciation of uppsala, although think of it as 2 words, upp and sala. upp is not pronounced as fast as you say it. same with sparlösa, good pronunciation but still pronounced as 2 words spar and lösa. you pronounce uppland like a swede :)

side note. upp means up and sala is plural for hall. so it's sort of "the hall located further up". the earliest name for it was Östra Aros, Aros means the outlet of a river. Östra simply means eastern. so eastern outlet. there was also Västra Aros (västra means western.. todays Västerås)
now its get kind of messy but the region called Uppsala was located north of Östra Aros, and when the bishop moved to Östra Aros in 1273 the name Uppsala followed. the original place for uppsala was named "Old uppsala". un-neccesary information but someone might benefit from it :) cheers and good video!

Looking for some good reads on Indo European, Norse, ancient German etc., that have not been corrupted in translation, any suggestions would be appreciated.
