Sadie, is our first Kelpie. She is smart, she knows what you are saying and what you want her to do. We couldn't have the farm if it wasn't for her. No matter what we are doing she is always in the game. Love the breed.

I just adore my Kelpie, she's only 3 and a half months . Had one in the mid 80, s, he was a hoot . Always happy and so active on our farm. Our pup is the centre of attention when friends call by, she's just so beautiful and loveable.

We have had 4 Kelpies over the last 50 years, they live for 12 to 14 years. They are great interactive dogs, have a strong will and love being with you. They get on well with other dogs and love people and kids. They require long walks and plenty of exercise.

I just adopted a Kelpie a few days ago she is 4 months old and quite the handful already in love with the dog I need to be patient to deal with her stubbornness I'm in the middle of house breaking thats lots of fun I will have her outside for 30min come inside and she pees on the rug. My last dog was a Catahoula very smart dog but I think the Kelpie is smarter and she is not my dog I am her human. I have my work cut out for me.

I got my Kelpie from the local animal pound about a year ago. She is now 2½yo. I don't know how her previous owners treated her but she was very timid when i first received her. It took months to get her out of her shell.

We live on a large fruit farm. She has no cattle or sheep to herd but does her best to try and herd the local kangaroos 😊.

I have now trained her up to obedience level three where she will work to all commands off lead. Overall we are a great team together.

Great summary not many ppl even in Australia know the difference between a bench kelpie and a working kelpie. Both are the most most amazing best friends you can have, I have had both as pets but if you get a working kelpie be sure to give it work to do otherwise it won’t work very well 😂. If you want a a more chilled bench kelpie the guys at tinaru kelpies and cattle dogs in orange NSW are worth speaking to. My current kelpie bobby dazzler is one of theirs and a dog that has absolutely enriched my life. So did the sassi and midnight though the working kelpies I grew up with, they were completely hilarious but they had unlimited energy…………. It can be a problem when living in the city. Sassy could climb like a cat and we were forever trying to work out how she got out all the time even though she was always back in the morning 😂

I’ve got a Kelpie named Maxwell. He’s so smart but also can be jealous needy and entitled lol. He is s little over 3 now we got him as a puppy and he was so stubborn to train (still is stubborn) I’ve found these dogs to be so smart they know much more of what you’re saying than you think. Most are super high energy like the video says but each dog is different, Maxwell can be so lazy sometimes but he still needs ample exercise.

My kelpie x collie is a beautiful boy. We still go out every morning for 60-90 minutes. At nights, our walks could be 10 minutes or 45 minutes (He doesn't like the cold winter, nor the hot summers...despite kelpies being bred for our Aussie summers.

We also do various play sessions through the day, usually he'll be chasing the ball, with some rope play thrown in there. We wrestle from time to time.

Is he a handful? Yes, at times. He turns 2 in 2 months. He has calmed down a lot, but I recognise he will always be a handful. People in the streets often comment on how well I'm doing with him. I still have negative thoughts at times about how he would be better off with someone else. And sure, maybe he could be. But he could be way worse off too.

He's loving, friendly, and an absolute little shit when he wants to be. But we do our best for each other, and sometimes that means I don't do as well as I want, and other times that means he doesn't do as well as he wants. I learned fairly early on that our relationship had to allow for compromise from both participants. He's intelligent and yet incredibly dumb sometimes (Aren't we all).

If I were to go back in time, I may have chosen a different breed (But also I adopted him), because my mental health is often too poor to invest the energy into formal training. He's trained well enough to be an inside dog, to sit and stay, to lay down etc. Recall is usually good but I make a judgement call when off lead with other dogs and people based on how he's been behaving. Oftentimes, he'll look ahead and see dogs or people, come to a stop, look at me, then go say hello when I let him. There are times where he will run off to them without checking with me though and I can call him back. Then there are times where he doesn't come back immediately.
That's on me. But he is wonderful. I wish I could do even more for him.

I got mine by accident (I wanted a cane corso but the rescue I got her from said the cane corso I applied for wouldn’t be able to match my energy and gave me Liara, and honestly I think they were just trying to get rid of her she is very difficult to deal with) and she’s a little shit but she’s mad smart she literally figured out how to open doorknobs (yes the knobs, not the handles, I don’t think she’s even seen the handles) and roll down my windows in the car. And nothing I can possibly do will tire her out. I will run her 5 miles and let her bolt around the yard for hours every day and she still has more than enough energy to spare. I love her and honestly if I didn’t have the kind of autism that made me obsessed with dogs and I wasn’t high energy myself I wouldn’t be able to handle her. She’s really well trained but she’s also a high energy teenager. A threat to my friends is leaving them her in my will. Tho tbf she’s not purebred kelpie. The rescue says just kelpie but she’s brindle which immediately tells me not purebred kelpie. Honestly she looks like she’s got maybe some Dutch shepherd and maybe some basenji in her. She definitely has most of the kelpie features tho.

We adopted a dog from a shelter and no one could figure out what breed she was. The shelter told us she was a German Shepard mixed with black lab. 😂 She’s a Kelpie lol. We named her Shadow because she’s all black and follows my husband like she’s his shadow. She’s the smartest dog I’ve ever seen. We barely had to train her. She just learned so fast it was so easy. Sometimes I swear she understands English. But she is really anxious. I mean REALLY anxious. So I don’t know how her original owners treated her but she’s literally the best family dog I’ve ever seen. We moved out to a large farm and she’s thriving out here.

Difference between a border collie and kelpie
Border Collie works well with commands from handler
Kelpie says to handler “ just keep quite I have these sheep/cattle under control and I know what I am doing “

My word of mouth history has it that “Kelpies” arose from a bitch named Kelpie who was bred with the very best dogs over the years and the term became “One of Kelpies pups” the “pups” were crossed and re-crossed with each other, the progeny often culled using a rifle. Good dogs outside the “breed” were bred into the mix, until the breed stabilised.
