The consequences of using the imperial system.

To be more accurate, 5’8 is 172.7, but no visual difference with 173 cm

Typical mixing up 5.8‘ with 5‘ and 8“ situation

the metric system is much easier, maybe it's because here in Brazil we use it, but when I started using feet, I made the same mistake 😂, I'm 178cm and I thought I was 5'8

People claim wrong height on social media that's what I have learnt🤭

I've seen stats from some people listed as 5'11 or "155 cm" 🤣🤣🤣

I see she mistakenly used the 8" as 0.8 foot which is 9.6". 60"+9.6"=69.6"x2.54= 176.784cm, rounded to nearest cm to 177cm.

This is because people use google to transfer 5’8 into cm or 173 cm into feet and inches. The problem with google is that the decimal is the tenth of a feet, meanwhile 1 inch is the twelfth of a feet.

For example, 5’1 is 5 feet (153 cm) + 1 inch (30 cm divided by 12, so around 2, 5 cm). So 5’1 is 155, 5 cm.
But when you tape 5, 1 feet into the google calculator, google understand it as 5 feet (153 cm + 0, 1 foot (30 cm divided by 10, so 3 cm).

With a small decimal (1 or 2 inches) it doesn’t make a big difference, but with a height decimal it makes a big difference.

For example:
5’8 is 173 cm (5 feet + 8x2, 5 = 153 + 20 cm), but if you tape 5, 8 on google calculator, google understands it as 5 feet + 8/10 of a foot (8/10 = 48/60 = 9, 6/12 ≈ 10/12), so it gives you 176, 78 cm.
But 176 cm is actually 5ft9 and a half.

Another example:
Reality: 5’10 = 5 ft + 10/12 ft = 178 cm

Google: 5’10 = 5 ft + 0, 1 ft = 155 cm (which is actually 5’1)

Google just doesn’t use the correct base (12 inches = 1 foot), it uses a decimal base (10 x 0, 1 ft = 1 ft).

Hey Big Rob, how tall do you need to be in the morning to be a 5ft 11 1/2 (181.6 cm) guy?

Is laying on the floor an accurate measurement? I’m 6’4 standing and 6’4.5 laying down

This what bugged me of 2....but than i realised 5, 9 feet is not the same as 5 foot 9 the numbers after the comma is in inches....the feet is converted to inches most generally....after the comma....so....5.8 feet(177cm) is equavelent to 5 foot 10 inches....(177cm)

I think they confused it with 5.8 ft which is actually close to 177 cm, whereas 5 ft 8 inches is 172.72 cm (not quite 173 cm, but still).

Hey Rob! Answer to your previous reply, The bottom of my tape isn't broke, it is working just fine! It is only broken from 160 cm's. Also, i checked the tape against a ruler, and the readings are correct!. So in that case, the technique i mentioned, which is, holding my broken tape on the are of the tile where i place the backmost part of my heels on, while holding my aerosol can against the door (which i measure myself on), and lowering the aerosol can, until it touches the topmost part of the tape (which is 160 cm's), and making a marking on my door, at that point, would be a reasonable enough technique right? I do think this could help me maximise accuracy, would you agree Rob? Thanks !

this is how he might have this wrong if you calculated the correct ammount 2.54cm for 1 inch then you get 173 his 5ft 8 inches, but if you used 2.5 cm for each inch it will be off and 173cm will be taller then 5ft 9, and less then 5ft 9inch and half, so in order to get 5ft 8 inches at 177cm she must have used 2.603cm per inch which is incorrect. Hospital might used 2.27cm per inch so someone that is actually 5ft 10.5 inches is 160cm and since they only shows 160cm because when I was home at that time I am taller then the fridge that is 5ft 6 inches tall so their was no way that I was just 5ft 3 and it was no shoes, and if I really was 5ft 3 inch I would move really slow because I would be too heavy and I move quickly so it make more sense that I was 5ft 10 inches and a half. The other posibility she messure 5.8ft his not 5ft 8 inches, 5.8ft is 5ft 10 inches which is close to 177cm but more like 178cm

Is it accurate if I measure my height by myself with measuring tape? And if I did, would I gain or lose an inch over said measurement?
