Devoted - A Father's Love: The Hoyt Team's Inspiring Story

Marathons and Ironmans are two of the most challenging athletic endeavours on the planet, the ultimate test of strength and endurance.

They're considered by most as barely possible, but not for the Team Hoyt father-son duo. This duo was so special because Rick, the son, was born with cerebral palsy and was a quadriplegic. And so, his father, Dick, pushed and pulled him in specialised wheelchairs, bikes, and boats.

They completed over 1,000 races and were immensely devoted to each other as ever, inspiring millions worldwide with their trademark motto, "Yes, you can." This is one of the greatest love stories of all time. A father who climbs mountains, runs marathons, travels to the ends of the earth to give his son a better life, a life that transcends the limitations of his body. This story shows that through perseverance and determination, love conquers all.

"One of the greatest love stories of all time" says it all!

Dick never once took other people’s credit, where it belonged to the brothers or mother they got it. This isn’t the story of two men, it’s the story of a strong loving family who were decades ahead of thinking at that time. My wife and I both have acquired disabilities and met volunteering at the Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) where I now work in the UK. Prior to becoming disabled I’d spent many years working in the learning disability/mental health sector. Even in the U.K. I can see where this family and many others like them changed so much, I don’t even think DPOs would exist without them. When I married my first wife in 1983 we lived with her late cousin who had cerebral palsy, so much has changed since then. With disabilities America and Britain have advanced together and I thank Dick, Rick all the Hoyts and people like them from the bottom of my heart.
