Alex Pelly Video Synthesis Workshop

LA-based artist Alex Pelly has been working with live video for over a decade, and is now well-known for her work with video synthesis. From her work doing live visuals for musicians and other performers to her monthly Dublab show Pellyvision, she has a proven track record of producing intricate, captivating realtime imagery.

In this video workshop, Pelly walks us through the basics of analog video synthesis, from thoughts about planning a modular video synth system to the functions of individual modules. She covers modules by LZX Industries and Erogenous Tones extensively, showing how they can easily become the core of a video-oriented modular system. And by providing an extended tour of her personal system and a detailed patch walkthrough, she demonstrates some tactics for harnessing feedback, audio reactivity, and hands-on control to create colorful layers of video that dynamically evolve along with music.

Mind blown. Just when I think I understand this whole synth adventure, something like this happens! Holy cow, she is cool!

Very nice. Gave me lots of info on how to use my modules in a relatively short video segment. Thanks.

Thank you. The bones of this setup is pretty close to what I'm using. I have vidiot + structure + fluxus duo in a feedback loop. I would love to drive deeper into the lzx stuff at some point, and this definitely helped me understand the concepts of those modules quite quickly. Thanks again!

Very cool! Love the lesson on generating video and audio from a modular system. I can see the potential for live shows to use this after Covid ends to add spice to a session.

Why would you state that you can’t patch into STRUCTURE? It has LZX patch inputs on the top left.

I would love to get a CNN module, but for now my budget only allows for a C-SPAN.

Great video! I'm waiting for my preordered LZX Chromagnon to get started with this stuff. Can I ask... what's the little screen on the right? That looks really handy!

As someone who is interested in getting started with this to try it out, which modules/gear would you recommend I get? Should I save up and just get Chromagnon or should I try finding a used VIDIOT? What would you recommend as a minimalist beginner setup in terms of modules?
