we used to be able to pump before paying in the US. We also used to prosecute for stealing gas....so not many people did it.

This used to be the case everywhere. I remember that it was around 2008 when people started driving away without paying and gas stations started enforcing pre payment.

In the US in the last century you would fill up first and pay after that. I suppose there where to many thieves in the US, so petrol station owners got cautious.

In America we used to do it that way but now we've stopped because people started driving away and all you got to do is take your tag off and cover your face

I don’t understand why you can’t pay at the pump. In the US you use your credit or debit card, swipe/tap then start pumping

Most places in upstate ny are allowed to pump first, they just don't advertise it

When gas prices more than doubled in 2005, gas stations in the US changed to make people pay before pumping. If you pay at the pump with a credit card, the gas station puts a hold on some number of dollars (I think it’s $50 to $100), then credits back whatever amount it held that didn’t get used for gas.

In case you just forgot to pay and left the petrol station, can you prove it? This has never happened to me here in Cyprus because we first pay and then fill our car during non working hours, and if your car takes less than the requested amount, the extra money will either be returned to your bank account within some working days, or if you pay with cash, you need to visit the station's cashier during working hours with the receipt and ask for your change. During working hours, an employee will fill your car and you'll have to pay it in the cashier.

In rural MN in the us where I live you can pump first but technically the way it works is that you click the pay inside button on the keypad or screen and then the clerk in the office takes a look at it and maybe even you through the camera. Then they approve or disprove you to pump gas prior to going inside and paying. I assume there are some people who never get approved either from their prior actions or the cashier's prejudice.

when I was in germany (1977)there were coin operated gas pumps in remote locations.
