The Best Places to Retire in Spain (and Why Madrid Has No Spot in the Top10)
Madrid: good quality of life for pensioners…. but for a high cost.
Population: 3,334,730
Hospital beds per 1000 inhabitants: 1.8 per 1,000 inhabitants
Income per capita: €34,821
HDI: 0.940 (2021)
Cost of living for a couple: €2,506.94 per month
Average maximum temperature in July: 28°C
Average temperature in January: 7°C
We were not supposed to put Madrid, the largest Spanish city, on this list of the best places to retire.
However, we inserted it for a few reasons.
Pros like the ample offer of high-quality major hospitals, entertainment and cultural options like science and art museums, an international airport that connects you to the entire world, excellent transport links by rail, and all the modern conveniences that a 3-million-people city can offer.
The second reason we put Madrid in this ranking is that indeed a lot of people (including over 6 thousand other British citizens and expats) choose this city to live in.
But what are the cons of living in one of the largest European cities?
First and foremost, Madrid is expensive (the same is true for another city we didn’t put in this list, Barcelona).
If you are retiring abroad, you want to be cost-effective, and compared to other Spanish cities, Madrid is not.

Lived and visit every year for upteens years ok, big cities are more expensive and convenient but medium size cities like Cuenca are best, many choices and lots of retirees there from all over especially down south.

Valencia... Cost of property in the central part is overpriced, reaching Western EU levels. No houses, just apartments in not very attractive concrete building ls in the neighbourhoods... the beach is far and the the boroughs around is roma settlements. If you are fine with all of that, then yes.

Excellent video. Thank you. We are 66YO retired educators visiting Poland and Estonia after helping a new school open in Lviv. We are seriously thinking of selling our Portland condo and moving to Europe. Is renting a better option than owning a home for expats in Spain? We always wanted to own, but now it seems that putting the cash in CDs is wiser than purchasing a home. Plus the healthcare is better in Spain than in the US. Your thoughts? Dean & Cindy
