Neck Examination - Cervical Spine Assessment - Clinical Skills - Dr Gill

Compose a new pain within athletes is cervical spine discomfort, thankfully in the vast majority of cases when the neck is examined the cause of the neck pain is found to be muscular.

However, pain can also refer from the neck to the arm, in which case it is important to be able to assess for cervical radiculopathy prior to gaining more information which may indicate an MRI is needed

We assess for radiculopathy by doing Spurling's test, an often overlooked part of the neck examination, but it should be included for completeness and reassurance of the patient - not forgetting the athlete or not, neck pain can be a considerable source of distress, so it's vital to be able to get information from the neck examination which allows you to safely reassure a patient when appropriate, or comment that neck exam found evidence that needs further investigation

I just love how descriptive, respectful and friendly you communicate with every patient in your videos.
A real gentleman and professional.

Would love to be examined by you one day, Dr. Gill!

Considering the large number of the ASMR community that watches Dr. Gill's videos, I would say that the ASMR phenomenon deserves far more serious research than it currently receives.
Formally, Dr. James Gill performs routine medical procedures. But the manner in which these procedures are performed, the mesmerizing voice of the doctor, and the kind/attentive attitude towards the patient is what causes a surge of pleasure waves in many people who watch the videos, incl. me too.

So it seems that Dr. Gill heals more with his voice and his attentiveness to the patient than by performing routine procedures. In this case, the performance of routine medical procedures is just the framework through which Dr. Gill displays his enormous ASMR talent.

I will say something that has been well known for a long time, but is often forgotten - people get sick first mentally, and only then physically. First the soul suffers, first the mind suffers, and only then the body begins to suffer - this is what medical science calls ''psychosomatics''.
And when a person goes to his doctor for treatment, he (the patient) often needs a conversation with a friend more than a medication. A person needs to be listened to with empathy, to be treated as a close person, not as a product that has health insurance.

In fact, Dr. Gill (knowingly or not) is giving us a glimpse of a future medicine that will not rely so much on strict medical treatment of the patient and on drug therapies, as it will have a beneficial effect on the human soul and psyche. And the doctor will treat his patient like a close friend.

1:03 It's so interesting to observe Dr.Gill making extra sure that he telegraphs touching the patient from behind.
So respectful and thoughtful, I love to see that!

Seeing this video suddenly reminded me of when I was in sixth grade and experienced neck pain that kept me out of school because I couldn’t turn my head sideways at all and had to rest it in a recliner with ibuprofen. It turned out that the pain was caused by bad posture in my sleep from being a stomach sleeper and sleeping with two pillows and as soon as I stopped sleeping with a second pillow it restored my posture and cleared up the pain and my neck returned to a normal range of motion. Even though it’s been nearly 27 years since I experienced that I still remember how awful it felt and have done everything I can to try and prevent it from ever happening again.

My poor wife couldn’t do any of those movements as she broke her neck in a car accident 30yrs ago and it’s fused, wired and plated. Still, we’ve cycled over 50k this week none of which was on tarmac so it isn’t all bad. 😁

Dr. Gill: "Now we need to have a look at your strength."
Patient <look of confusion> : "Have you witnessed my fitness?"

I'm pretty sure a orthopaedic surgeon did damage to my neck. In the way he examined me. He put a hell of a lot of crazy pressure on my head. I didn't have neck pain. But since he did it. My neck is hurting like crazy. The pain is so unbearable I'm afraid to move my neck and it makes noises 😢😢😢😢😢😢
