This unique setting of Modest Mussorgsky’s most well-known work will provide an opportunity for you to showcase the outstanding musicianship of your ensemble, while also connecting the student’s outdoor show to a historically significant 19th Century work! The introduction to the show begins just as it does in the original Ravel orchestration – a trumpet solo playing the “Promenade” theme. This builds up to a lush and gorgeous impact, followed by a seamless transition into the show.I am not do you see my hands

The Tin Man wasn’t always made of metal… This show tells the story of a man named Nick Chopper, who started out as a lumberjack hopelessly in love, and ended up being cursed into a life made of tin.

1. Nick Chopper
As the show begins, we hear Nick chopping wood in the forest, his heart beat pulsing with each strike of his axe. Small feature moments for different sections of your ensemble lead us to hear “Over the Rainbow” as Nick looks up from his wood and meets eyes with a beautiful woman in the woods. Little does Nick know, the woman is in the employ of a grumpy old witch, who won’t let her go so easily…

2. Falling in Love
A trumpet solo based loosely on the melodic material from “Rainbow” is followed by a Baritone solo in the same style. We see Nick falling more deeply for his new found love, and hear Nick’s heart beating, just as it did early in the show. But this time, it beats for someone else.

3. The Curse
The witch, refusing to let the girl go, places a curse on Nick’s axe so that each time he tries to cut wood, the axe takes off one of his limbs instead, turning it to tin! This dark and fast-paced movement includes features for the percussion section and individual wind sections as we see Nick fighting against the curse but slowly losing one limb at a time, until all that’s left is his torso and beating heart…

4. Becoming the Tin Man
Try as he might, Nick cannot escape the curse of the witch. We see him continue to struggle as his heartbeat slows down, and as we hear more mournful shades of “Rainbow.” Finally, Nick’s heart beats its final beat as he is turned completely to tin, stuck and frozen in the forest, where he will remain until he’s found by a lost girl from Kansas…
