Who will protect people displaced by climate change? | UpFront

Climate change is fast approaching the point of no return.

From extreme heatwaves, wildfires, and drought in the western part of the United States to deadly floods in Nigeria, climate disasters are forcing people to flee from their homelands in search of safety. Estimates predict hundreds of millions will be forced to migrate by 2050.

How are countries and international institutions going to tackle the issue of protecting climate refugees? This week on UpFront, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, tells Marc Lamont Hill that “in a world that is going towards more displacement ... including because of climate,” the response from rich countries has been “wrong in so many different ways".

Yes I am living in Morocco and we have drought here and as temperatures climb I feel for future generations, moving to a colder country would be the best idea. Yes environmental refugees and the policy of the UN needs to be updated. Climate refugees is an important thing to talk about and consider. I am originally from South Africa and the heat we experience here in the summer is sometimes unbearable. I work from home and one of the reasons is because of not wanting to venture out of the house 🏠 as much as possible because of the heat. Alhamdulillah for my ability to earn online because of course Morocco is a poor country and living on just one salary is not enough.🌈🌈🌈🙏🙏🙏🙏yes indeed a climate apartheid. Without income you can't afford to leave. I am so grateful for Onpassive which will set me free financially for many generations to come.

I want to ask -- what do you mean by 'protection'? Your are not giving any definition. Do you mean legal protection? Do you think it's realistic to provide all 'climate refugees' with legal protection? Or do you just mean giving shelter, water and food to these people? It's not clear to me what you are trying to do. The word 'protection' sounds good and almost sacrosanct, but should not be used too lightly.
