In developed nations, Alzheimer's is one of the most costly diseases.
There is a higher incidence of Alzheimer's disease in developed nations due to increased life expectancy.
The causes of Alzheimer's disease are a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the brain over time.
There is an involvement of the APOE 4 gene in Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative diseases.
Dr. Mobeen Syed discusses how Alzheimer's disease affects the brain. Alzheimer's disease starts with the hippocampus. As the hippocampus is a door to the new memories, the patient of Alzheimer's disease suffers first from anterograde-amnesia. The patient is unable to develop new memories.
The progression of Alzheimer's disease is in a centrifugal way. As the disease progresses, the speech area is affected. Mood imbalance occurs. Executive functions (decision making) destroy when the disease progresses to the frontal lobe.
Patients of Alzheimer's disease need caregiving.
The most common causes of death due to Alzheimer's disease are recurrent infections (for example, pneumonia) and dehydration.
The patient of Alzheimer's disease can not take care of his own needs. He does not even know that he needs to drink water. So dehydration can cause the death of the patient.
