Petra, was called Raqiem by the Nabateans was the central trade hub of the ancient silk route. The very location of this ancient, temple city makes it prone to earthquakes. It sites right on the Mediterranean plate brushing against the Asian plate. There were over 11 major earthquakes from 6th century till date which made most occupants to evacuate Petra especially during 6th, and 7th centuries.

Nabataean history is very interesting. Got some ancient coins of Petra that I posted videos of. They had a good understanding of how to collect rain water and flow it through out their area especially for being in a desert.

It was never lost, the locals just didn't hang out there. How are you an explorer that "finds" something that locals already knew where it was? But I do appreciate that he said he was first European that has seen it in 500 years.

Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones was seen fleeing from the entrance at Petra with his Dad, Sallah, and Brody, as the Temple where the Grail was held was Collapsing.

The carved facades are just a drop in the bucket when it comes to the Amaxzing city of Petra and all its advancements that the Nabbateens emplotyed. It was basically the ancient Worlds version of a Resort on the Silk Road.
