In this video Heimler walks you through another required Supreme Court case for the AP Government curriculum, namely, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (FEC).

This case is all about campaign finance laws and how they affect the first amendment's protection of free speech. And if you think that corporations aren't people, well, then the Supreme Court disagrees with you.

It's unfortunate that it's so common for people to equate corporations with unions when it comes to campaign funding, when the power of unions have so steadily decreased, while the power of corporations has increased. They really shouldn't be put in the same category.

One small error: The name of the legislation is the "Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act." Hence the acronym BCRA.

On to my opinion, which is that corporations are NOT mere associations of individual persons. Corporations are granted privileges which would not otherwise apply to any association of people. Privileges such as limited liability so that shareholders in a corporation cannot be sued for that corporation's wrongdoing.

Every other democratic country on planet Earth has serious limitations upon corporations influencing election campaigns with corporate money. And not just within 60 days of an election.

For example, in Canada, corporations and trade unions are banned from donating any money whatsoever to a political party, candidate or third party advocating for a political party, candidate or issue. They are also banned from providing any of their employees to work for a party, candidate or third party advocate.

We do need to put a cap on campaign donations, we can't have mega millions pouring it, it should be capped too a flat percentage rate with their personal incomes. It's ridiculous how much power lobbyists have and this would be the fix
